the day started with the reassurance of a democratic process — the respectful, close races of two senate races in georgia. they exemplified the tremendous, grassroots efforts by community organizers who knocked down obstacle after obstacle: historic voter suppression, gerrymandering, structural racism forcing individual voter and community disengagement. despite the deck being built for all cards to be stacked against them, organizers told disenfranchised voters, one by one, that their voices mattered, that they could make a difference, and they delivered. …


The walk to work is eerily empty. At the hospital entrance, in a surreal dystopia, staff members silently flash their IDs and are ushered in through one door, visitors through another. The elevators in the morning are still crowded, but there’s a determined effort to limit contact with each other and with all hard surfaces. The moment I escape enclosed quarters, I douse my hands in hand sanitizer, then drown my workspace in disinfectant wipe right after. I go to the protective equipment dispensary stations to pick up my rations: one mask for the shift, one face shield for use…


The Au Bon Pain in our hospital is like most others: yellow lighting and tiles, clear plastic cases showcasing flaky pastries, the scents of savory and sweet mingling as customers line up with their orders. The customers are as diverse as their purchases: nurses grabbing a quick sandwich on their lunch break, physicians downing an iced coffee as they scramble to return to work, patients and their families trying to break the monotony of hospital food with a Danish.
